Sabores da Soalheira is a cheese factory situated in the Beira Baixa region, brand of a family business, dedicated to the art, tradition and craft of making cheese for over three generations.

In one way of another the secret of making cheese passes from generation to generation.

In 1997 the family business was recovered and adapted to the needs and demands of that time. Since then Sabores da Soalheira searches for quality products to ensure total customer satisfaction, without losing the taste for tradition and the “know-how” taught by previous generations. Sabores da Soalheira has hand-picked some of the best milk suppliers in the countryside surrounding region.

More recently, due to the need to adapt and to increase the capacity of production in order to meet an increasing demand of the products, Sabores da Soalheira moved to new premises that provide the necessary conditions, adapted to the new needs of the company and the current requirements. The tradition continues and the treatment of the cheese is still made by hand, ensuring the quality, flavor and texture of the original recipe.

Very recently,  Sabores da Soalheira has joined Singapore Newspaper Taste Awards 2019 and won a Gold and a Silver Medal in this competition:

Nata Pura : 300 Years of History, An excellence of a culinary treasure “NATA”

NATA PURA is the brand of excellence of a culinary treasure known as “NATA” (aka pastel de nata or portuguese custard tarts).

The Nata Pura product is pre-baked and blast frozen for transport and storage. Storage must maintain a temperature of -18ºC. This cold chain is to remain unbroken during transport. In cold, the product has a shelf-life of 12 months, allowing for a simplified inventory management. Once defrosted at the Point of Sale, it should be prepared and consumed within 24 to 48 hours.

Product preparation is a fast and easy process. Without allowing the Natas to defrost, put them directly in the oven at 250ºC for 12 minutes. Remove them from the foil tins and place them on the paper tins and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving.

A careful and detailed communication strategy has been developed with the purpose of elevating the Nata, particularly Nata Pura, to a standard of the pastry industry. All our marketing is streamlined to this effect to create branding and infuse Nata Pura with the momentum it needs to spread out and achieve its goals. The honey is extracted “cold” and put into jars without resorting to any pasteurization process in order to maintain all its nutritional and organoleptic properties that make it a unique food for every well-being. By virtue of this, honey is liquid immediately after the honey extraction; subsequently it goes through completely natural processes such as crystallization – which is synonymous with quality – with the exception of that of acacia, chestnut and honeydew: the latter, in fact, have a higher percentage of fructose which generally makes honey honey liquid and crystallization is difficult. All the others will gradually crystallize, based on the percentage of the two sugars present. Furthermore, the preservation temperature also affects this process: at 14 degrees so the honey crystallizes faster, and the deviations up or down from this value affect the crystallization rate. If you want to make the crystallized apple liquid just dissolve it in a bain-marie, not exceeding 45 degrees. Apicoltura Luca Finocchio, with his maniacal attention, tries not to ruin the extraordinary product that bees give us.

 Heihoef is a collaboration of pig farmers with ambition!

Tiny Schepers is an ambitious entrepreneur on the Heyde Hoeve in Nuenen and is also the founder of the partnership between farmers. The farm has been in the family’s possession for 63 years! 

De Heyde Hoeve farm is located in the village of Gerwen, municipality of Nuenen. The village is located in the Meierij of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The village is located in the Meierij of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The farm is located on the lands that used to belong to the Duke of Brabant. During the middle ages there were different loanlords who farmed out the property to various residents. During the sixties of the last century the Heyde Hoeve became the property of the Schepers family. The parents of the current farmer and CEO Tiny Schepers. The map of 1836 shows that the surroundings of the Heihoef (later it became Heyde Hoeve) looked very different.

Vincent van Gogh also almost certainly roamed the fields of the Heyde Hoeve. This world-famous painter lived and worked in Nuenen in the period 1883/1885. Did he find his inspiration here for his paintings of peasant life? If you take a walk in nature in our area, you can still taste the atmosphere of the past! Since 1955 the farm has been owned by the Schepers family. They kept cows and pigs in the old farm. Mien and Karel had 5 children. Son Tiny took over the business from his parents and specialized in the pigs. He is the current owner and renovated the old stables and the farm. De Heyde Hoeve is the birthplace of collaboration Heyde Hoeve. A cooperation of pig farmers with attention and care for the animal and preservation of the natural environment.

Heyde Hoeve pork is of excellent quality. The pigs are of the Duroc breed. Duroc pigs have beautifully marbled meat, which not only ensures tenderness and juiciness, but also a full, pure taste. The Heyde Hoeve pig was voted “Best Pig in the Netherlands” in 2012, based on taste and sustainability! That is enjoying pork with the taste of vrüger!

Interview: Mr. Tiny Schepers

CEO, Founder of the cooperative network of farmers who take their responsibility and want build on sustainable production of cattle and pork by working together.

Question 1: Do you already export to Singapore ? If yes, where ? If no, what type of importers & distributors are you looking for in Singapore ?

Answer :  We do not export to Singapore yet. On international trade fairs we have made good contacts with serious companies who are interested to buy and import Heyde Hoeve Duroc meat. Besides the fresh frozen meat we found importers interested in value added products such as dried sausages and hybrid products. We are interested to build up business in Singapore with importers and wholesales of fresh frozen Cross Duroc meat and meat products derived from the Heyde Hoeve Duroc pork.

Question 2: What is the most unique and qualitative part of your products, different from competitors ?

Answer : The Heyde Hoeve Duroc brand is unique and famous for three important items:

  • The excellent taste of Cross Duroc pork meat, the Heyde Hoeve Duroc brand. Proven to be the most tasty pork meat in The Netherlands in recent history, announced by a panel of top level chefs of famous dutch restaurants.
  • The inspiring story of sustainable, circular pork breeding and pork meat production.
  • The traceability of pig and pork meat throughout the complete production chain.

Furtermore we produce top level dry cured sausages, hybrid products based on Duroc pork and quinoa, ready meals and stews. Also these innovative products are about the conquer the world market.

Question 3: When did you start to export your brand worldwide, and what is your development plan for the next years ?

Answer : We have been starting to build up international relationships since we decided to take part in international trade fairs such as Anuga and Sial. The first time it was three years ago during Sial Paris in 2016. Our aim is to build up international relationships worldwide. This because we are a growing company and meet more and more interest for Cross Duroc pork meat from abroad. Importing countries like Singapore are showing more and more interest in food with a fair and sustainable story. Heyde Hoeve is telling this story and is ready for exploring export markets such as Singapore. Our plan for the next years is to build this up together with reliable business partners worldwide.

Quesos Artesanos Villarejo S.L. history begins in 1987, when the doors of a company dedicated to the artisanal elaboration of authentic Manchego cheese were opened to the public, in the municipality of Villarejo de Fuentes. The town, located in the center of the Manche Alta Conquense, has always enjoyed clean air and temperatures suitable for the practice of this guild. Added to some shepherds of excellent qualities, from their cattle the necessary raw material for such elaboration is obtained. In fact, one of the economies that proliferated in the municipality, since the Bronze Age, was 1800 BC. C., was the grazing, because in a hill near the municipality were located cheese and tools related to the production of cheese that was closely linked to that tradition. 

Nowadays, The company, of deep-rooted family origin, as parents and grandparents already practiced it, continues to grow year after year, and in addition to expanding its work space and distribution of its products, it currently has a staff that offers work to several families of the municipality and surroundings. As appropriate, the factory has been adapting to sanitary and legal regulations according to current regulations.

It is therefore 1,500 square meters that offer visitors a passionate tour of the world of traditional cheese and derivative processing: processing department, ripening chambers, drying, office, shop, etc.

All this, once the daily collection of milk in the region, fresh milk, from previously selected livestock farms and maintaining optimal conditions and temperatures for their transfer, is finished. The degree of cleanliness in our facilities and in the product is, at all times, one of the necessary and essential conditions to reach its final quality.

Proof of all this, is the enormous development achieved until today, exporting the product to virtually everyone. Wherever you go, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Brussels, Germany, Sweden, you can taste the flavor of a cheese with Manchego airs, moving in a few seconds to the green field where it began manufacturing.

Interview of Mr Diego Álvarez

Sales, Marketing and Exports Manager

Question 1: Do you already export to Singapore ? If yes, where ? If no, what type of importers & distributors are you looking for in Singapore ?

Answer :  At present, we are exporting a very small amount of product to Singapore, In 2017 we participated in a Food fair in Singapore, and, since then, we are in contact and negotiating with some importers. We have also sent an order but they have been small quantities

The companies we are interested in working with are importers of high quality gourmet products.

Question 2: What is the most unique and qualitative part of your products, different from competitors ?

Answer : In Quesos Artesanos Villarejo, we work the product in a traditional way, adapting the processes to new technologies, but without losing the craftsmanship, we do many jobs manually, and we are oriented to the production of quality products, not in manufacture a lot of industrial form.

We work the product in natural crust, we manufacture artisan cheese from raw sheep’s milk, and we manufacture Manchego PDO artisan cheese with raw milk from Manchego sheep that can only be manufactured in Castilla la Mancha, and it is a unique product in the world since milk of the sheep of the Manchego breed only found in this area of ​​Spain.

Most of the Manchego cheese that leaves Spain is industrial, is made with pasteurized milk and is painted with aggressive inedible paints to work less cheese, our product, being made with raw milk and handmade, has much more flavor and much more quality than the industrial product.

It is worth mentioning the large number of international awards that our cheeses have received, more than 60 since we opened our factory, and 16 in this year 2019, highlighting the 7 medals obtained in Singapore Taste Awards (4 gold and 3 silver), 4 medals in World Cheese Awards (2 super gold and 2 gold), 5 stars in Great çtaste awards, gold medal in the International Contest of Rome and the recognition of the best cheese factory making sheep cheese from Spain by Lux & Life Magazine.

Question 3: When did you start to export your brand worldwide, and what is your development plan for the next years ?

Answer : We started exporting in the year 2000, our biggest market outside Spain is the United Kingdom, where we are present in important markets like harrods, we also export to Sweden, Denmark, Kuwait, Germany, Canada and a small amount to the US, and, as I said before, also a very small amount to Singapore. The export accounts for about 20% of our total turnover.

For the next few years we want to increase our export sales, we want that in the next 5 years it represents 40% of our total billing. We are going to focus on Southeast Asian markets (Singapore, Japan, China …) and we want to do actions in the United States and in Eastern European countries
