ESCUDIA, a name that certainly evokes the fights in the floral games of the nobles of Civitas or of the Cavalhadas by S. João and the parties in honor of the great of the country.
The typhoon came and toppled the great Pinheira and the Escudial was without that king from among mountains, high of uprights extended to cover a lot of earth, to treat the peoples, on festive days.
When the typhoon felled the giant pine tree of Bussaco, Dr. Alfredo Augusto de Frias de Eça Ribeiro, owner of the Escudial, was passing right next to this pine tree. And since he had suffered nothing, he decided to have a little chapel built there, because he attributed it to a miracle.
The ESCUDIAL FARM initially with 3.5 hectares of old vineyards was expanded in 2003 with 3 hectares of vineyards with the traditional Dão grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz). The personal taste of the producer and the consumers’ appeal for “different” wines led ESCUDIAL QUINTA to focus on the exclusive production of “WITHOUT WOOD” wines . The aging of wines is made only in stainless steel vats and glass bottle.
