DFJ Vinhos, S.A. : The New Portugal, The Highest Quality Portuguese Wines

0
DFJ Vinhos, S.A. : The New Portugal, The Highest Quality Portuguese Wines by Singapore Newspaper

Since 1998, DFJ Vinhos SA has exported over 99 percent of its 8 million bottles to over 50 countries. “DFJ Vinhos SA exports 99 percent of ten million bottles.”

Internationalization, efficiency, and a diverse bid in response to consumer desires are the watchwords of a company whose major goal is to attain the best quality/price ratio for each of its products at all times in order to keep its consumers pleased. A risk that has paid off, as seen by the company’s growing international presence and several honors received outside of Portugal: more than 3500 since 2010.

DFJ produces wine on 250 hectares of vineyards, principally in the Lisbon area, as well as on a number of estates. The most important is Quinta do Porto Franco, which has 80 hectares and one winemaking core. José Neiva Correia grew raised in this neighborhood. DFJ Vinhos’ headquarters, Quinta da Fonte Bela, is equally substantial, with 50 hectares and a second winemaking base.

WINEMAKING & INNOVATION

José Neiva Correia, Herdeiros, brings a neat agriculture to the careful selection of grape varieties to be planted in the many fields, Herdeiros, José Neiva Correia, where there is no room for chemicals in their soils, only high-quality organic matter and carefully chosen rootstocks according to the conditions.

With the same excitement and spirit of innovation that characterizes him, this winemaker recently conducted out another experiment, this time in the municipality of Torres Vedras: he planted a hectare and a half of Dorn Felder. a German grape variety with early maturation and high resistance to Atlantic effect that produces wines with a lot of color and fruit, even to consumer taste, but is nearly unknown in Portugal. The results were so impressive that the company plans to release a variety of items as soon as rules allow. We’ll have to wait and see if there’s any proof to back it up.

Jose Neiva Correia grew up in a land of wine and vineyards, at Quinta de Porto Franco, one of the oldest properties in Alenquer’s municipality, with a history that, according to historians, predates the country’s independence. José Neiva Correia, one of Portugal’s most successful winemakers, will pursue a large portion of the raw material for DFJ Vinhos, which he founded in 1998 and now produces an estimated annual production of eight million bottles, 30 labels, and 110 different wines from Portugal’s Douro, Peninsula de Setbal, Lisbon, and Verdes regions.

On both his father’s and mother’s lines, José Neiva Correia, a descendant of many generations of winegrowers, carried on the family legacy with taste and skill. Anyone who knows him or has worked with him can witness to the zeal with which he labels each of his many and unique wines, which he creates by blending odd grape kinds with surprising outcomes. The demand for end-product quality is unquestionably the same, whether top-of-the-line at higher costs and smaller runs, or higher numbers to meet enormous global markets. You must be able to execute it flawlessly.

He’s been in the vanguard of introducing new grape varieties to Portugal, fighting for more environmentally sustainable agriculture, and looking for solutions to one of the industry’s most pressing issues: how to better fence bottles with cork stoppers. He also developed and patented an ozone-based cork cleaning system (which he later sold to the Amorim Group) that helps reduce the amount of TCA (trichloroanisole, the component that causes “smell a stopper”), the winemaker’s worst enemy.

Quinta da Fonte Bela – Cathedral of the Wine

It’s a one-of-a-kind centennial property in Vila Ch de Ourique – Cartaxo, 80 kilometers north of Lisbon. The majority of the structures are examples of “cast-iron architecture,” which was popularized by Eiffel’s students in the second half of the nineteenth century. Engineers from Eiffel’s studio, who were in Portugal at the time working on major projects such as the Santa Justa elevator in Lisbon and the D. Porto’s Lus Bridge. The owner of the Quinta at the time, António Francisco Ribeiro Ferreira, took advantage of their presence and commissioned the plans for what would become the core of his agricultural activities.

Question 1: Do you already export to Singapore ? If yes, where ? If no, what type of importers & distributors are you looking for in Singapore ?

We don’t export to Singapore.

We are not experts in the Singapore market and its consumers, which means that we need to trust and rely on partners in the market.

We are looking for importers with knowledge of the market, capable of developing sales, marketing and distribution.

Question 2: What is the most unique and qualitative part of your products, different from competitors ?

We work hard to produce wines ready for any event and everyday consumption.

We produce easy-drinking, tasty, elegant wines capable of pleasing those who don’t like wine, and as well, sure, the ones who love wine.

That’s why we always recommend buyers to taste our wines with consumers who care about price, quality and pleasure.

Question 3: When did you start to export your brand worldwide, and what is your development plan for the next years ?

We were born in 1998 only to export to  the UK.

Today we have 250 ha of vineyards with certified sustainable production.

Mr. José Neiva Correia is the head winemaker and owner, making wines since the 1974 vintage.

In 2020 we exported more than 99% of 10 million bottles to more than 50 countries.

Scea Chateau Haut Pougnan : A wine region in Bordeaux, Fine Wines with Taste of Elegance and Balance

0
Scea Chateau Haut Pougnan : A wine region in Bordeaux, Fine Wines with Taste of Elegance and Balance by Singapore Newspaper

On the slopes of the right bank of the Garonne, on exceptional clay-limestone and gravelly soils, Scea Chateau Haut-Pougnan is located in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, a wine region in Bordeaux, France. The vines for red wine are in the east and south of the plantation, while the white wine grapes are in the west.

The area’s clay-limestone soils allow the vineyard to produce particularly good wines with a precise bouquet thanks to its clay-limestone composition.

The three Bordeaux grape varieties used in the red wines are Merlot (50 percent), Cabernet Sauvignon (40 percent), and Cabernet Franc (ten percent). White wine grapes such as Sauvignon (70 percent), Semillion (25 percent), and Muscadelle (5 percent) provide them with elegance and a renowned aroma. This red, robust, fruity wine has a very well-balanced tannicity. While adorned in a stunning attire, it continues to delight with its grace and balance in the mouth.

The delicacy and smell of the white wine are outstanding. This rosé wine has a light robe, a great nose, and a fruity, energetic, and powerful finish on the palate. The Entre-Deux-Mers has a light robe and a wonderful complement. Degustation of young white wines They go well with seafood and shellfish dishes. Hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie go well with wines from the rosé family. These wines benefit from the first two years.

Singapore’s food industry and market trends in the F&B sector

0
Singapore's food industry by Singapore Newspaper

If you’re new to Asia and want to sell your food there, Singapore is an excellent place to start. People are willing to experience new tastes and flavors because the country is a melting pot of many ethnicities. People can be waiting up for something exceptional since food is a national passion. What you’ll also notice is that if the product does well in Singapore, distributors in other Asian nations are more willing to market it.

Trends in the Singapore food and beverage industry

Monthly household earnings have risen dramatically in recent decades, and there are many educated and westernized customers, including middle-aged PMETs and a younger generation of PMETs. Professionals, managers, executives, and technicians are abbreviated as PMETs. PMETs in their forties and fifties have more money to spend on the industry, and their consumer tendencies are well-complemented by their refined sense of taste acquired primarily via travel. Because they grew up surrounded and affected by modern western cafés, social media, and their friends, the younger generation of PMETs in their twenties and thirties have made significant contributions to the food and beverage business.

The expatriate community

Singapore has managed to entice expatriates to make the city-state their second home. The majority of the foreigners were from Western countries. Another type of immigrant is the self-employed businessperson who invests in Singapore and hires Singaporeans. Foreigners can sample a variety of international foods and beverages from the country’s broad choices.

Growing number of inbound tourists

The number of tourists has increased throughout time as a result of the following factors:

Flights from nearby/neighboring nations are becoming more frequent.
The establishment of two casinos
Meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions are becoming more common.
New tourism attractions are being developed.
It’s important to consider the following consumer trends:

Singaporeans lead busy lives and have little time to cook meals, so many prefer to eat on the move or buy processed and packaged foods.
Households have opted for Western-style foods as a result of Western influence. Instead of the traditional ones, they are ingesting more of them.

Singaporeans can afford to buy food and beverages regardless of how pricey they are because of their high wages.

The Singapore food industry

Market size

Singapore is unable to generate a sufficient amount of food. As a result, it has become one of the top importers of agricultural and processed goods in the world. Because of increased earnings and an influx of visitors, this consumption rate is only projected to increase.

Market structure

4 Major groups of food retailers in Singapore

  • Large retailers
  • Convenience stores
  • Petrol stations
  • Traditional stores

There is a huge number of retail outlets in Singapore at the moment.

Challenges

  • Retail growth is present but not as fast as expected.
  • Retails have also resorted to giving discounts in order to attract consumers.
  • Products which are poorly differentiated or are not well supported by marketing are facing challenges as well.
  • Market for staples is weak.
  • For new products, marketing and distribution is extremely high.
  • High costs involved when companies try to maintain shares and positions.
  • Changes in commodity and freight prices will have an impact on food sales – a concern for Singapore due its large imports.
  • Low consumer confidence resulting to bargain hunting/seeking.

Players

The key retail channels in Singapore are supermarket chains and hypermarkets and there are 3 major groups that operate these channels:

  • The Dairy Farm Group
  • FairPrice Group
  • Sheng Siong

Specialty and fine food in Singapore

Specialty stores in Singapore serve good delicacies at premium rates to affluent customers, and they have a modest market share.

Organic and natural foods in Singapore

The organic food market in Singapore is tiny, with rice accounting for the majority of sales. Singapore imports its organic food as well.

Ready meals in Singapore

Due to their hectic schedules, Singaporeans have been able to save time by purchasing ready-to-eat meals. This has given consumers additional opportunities to alter their perceptions of ready-to-eat meals.

Challenges

Singapore is a highly competitive market that presents a number of difficulties. The retail market is controlled by a few major grocery chains. Marketing and distribution costs are higher, and maintaining market share is always tough.

Importers and distributors are looking for suppliers who:

  • Deal with local demands for promotional campaigns.
  • Develop products and packages that fit local demand requirements. Typically package sizes are relatively big compared to the rest of the region
  • Have a product and brand that is unique enough to break into the market.
  • Be flexible in terms of returns and profit goals.
  • Adopt a medium to long term strategy and action plan to build their market in Singapore.

Although the market is competitive, the spin-off effect in other Asian countries can be substantial. Guidance from local market entry specialists is essential. Joining in a competition and winning an award can help you to find new market in Singapore. Join Singapore Awards 2022.

VINEDOS PUERTAS LTDA. : El Milagro, a sophisticated wine cellar with cutting-edge technology

VINEDOS PUERTAS LTDA. : El Milagro, a sophisticated wine cellar with cutting-edge technology by Singapore Newspaper

In 1950, Jose Puertas Pons founded the Vinedos Puertas family company. Jose Puertas Pons was born in the Spanish town of Campo (Huesca province, Aragon), which is nestled between the towering Turbon (2,492m) and Cotiella (2,912m) peaks on the banks of the Esera River. Through hard labor, devotion, and a distinct vision of development, he has established and expanded Vinedos Puertas into one of Chile’s most important wine producers.

The Vinedos Puertas vineyard included 80 hectares of fields irrigated by water flowing from the Andes Mountains, as well as a one-million-liter winery known as El Milagro, located near Convento Viejo in Curico Valley’s heart. The company specialized in fruits and bulk wines, as well as custom winemaking, serving the country’s top winemakers while also promoting job creation and growth in the surrounding area.

Vinedos Puertas’ goal is to create Vinedos Puertas as a company dedicated to exceeding consumers’ expectations in the international market with high-quality goods.

Vinedos Puertas’ goal is to continually improve the final quality of their wines. The selection of varietals, clones, and rootstocks for Vinedos Puertas is based on terroir and climate and soil conditions. They process the grapes in their modern wine cellar, which is equipped with cutting-edge technology and overseen by our highly qualified and competent workforce, as harvest time approaches. The Vinedos Puertas firm operates sustainably and adheres to ethical standards aimed at both its employees and clients, in accordance with all current legal norms and legislation.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel barrels and epoxy concrete tanks with temperature-regulating plates. The climate-control system in the building has chilling and heating capacities of 2,000,000fg/hour (8,000,000BTU/h) and 1,000kcal/h, respectively, allowing us to produce high-quality wines on a consistent basis.

According to them, the wines are stored in epoxy cement and/or stainless steel containers at controlled temperatures until they reach their final destination. Reserve wines are matured for a period of time determined by the oenologist in French oak barrels.

The wines are bottled according to a schedule that is determined by the wine variety and kind. The bottles are then stored in an acclimatized basement until they are ready to be shipped. Among the countries that have received the cargo are Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Slovenia, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Switzerland.

Interview of Alexandre Petit, Jury Member for Singapore Awards 2021

0
Singapore Awards 2021

Mr. Alexandre Petit answered our questions during the tasting of session 4 of the Singapore Wines Awards 2021.

Alexandre Petit is responsible for selections and purchases for 2 major import groups located in Taipei (for Mainland China and Taiwan) and Hong Kong for more than 10 years. His expertise in wine is highly recognized in Asia. In particular, he was selected by the 7-Eleven Group and other retail chains in China with more than 15,000 stores that has been communicating its expertise directly in stores for many years and still today.

How are the tastings of the 4th edition of Singapore Wine & Spirits Awards 2021?

All the tastings for the Singapore Awards sessions went very well, despite the covid. Apart from some logistical problems due to the slowdown in international transport, and less travel to do tastings directly at international fairs, the whole competition was able to be maintained.

How do you see the evolution of the markets in the years to come?

I believe that the market will continue to develop by emphasising the quality of taste of wines, beers and spirits, with a growing trend for organic products.

Consumers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and accustomed to consuming higher quality beverages, and are becoming more demanding about what they buy.

The trend is therefore towards a permanent increase in purchase prices, lower consumption per person but with an increasing number of consumers, and an ever greater emphasis on quality.

Finally, what do you think a competition like Singapore Wines & Spirits Awards can bring to producers who want to export to Asia?

As Singapore has an image of prestige and luxury, with very demanding consumers and distributors, a medal in the Singapore Awards will be recognised throughout Asia.

The jury is increasingly demanding for the Singapore Awards, as we have to evolve our criteria in relation to the taste and research criteria of consumers.

As their buying habits become more sophisticated, we are adapting the competition to these new habits.

This will further enhance the value of the Singapore Awards medals from 2022 onwards.
