Vinedos Y Bodegas De La Marquesa : Generation of highest quality wines

Must read

BODEGAS DE LA MARQUESA is still a family company, owned by Juan Pablo De Simon y Milans del Bosch, the Winery’s great grandson, and continues to follow the Marquis de la Solana’s vision of “Vino de Pago,” a more regional appellation of origin.

Now, the 5th generation, Pablo, Jaime, and Maria de Simon (Juan Pablo’s children), have taken over the company’s various responsibilities and are preparing the next generation. People are refreshed, bringing with them new ideas and approaches to the market, but still adhering to the company’s founding principles:  family, estate vineyards and respect for quality and work well done.

Significant investments have been made in recent years to modernize the winery and provide it with the requisite technological tools.

Approximately 480,000 kg of grapes are grown annually, nearly all of which come from the family’s 65 hectares of vineyards and about 15 hectares of vineyards planted by long-term suppliers to the winery, all of which are carefully controlled to ensure grape quality. A total of 306,000 litres of red wine and 30,000 litres of white wine are produced per year on average.

All of the vines are in Rioja Alavesa, with the majority of them in Villabuena, a short distance from the winery, on sunny hillsides descending from the Sierra de Cantabria, which protects them from the north, to the Ebro River in the south-southeast. Some very mature, low-yield vineyards are conserved, while new plantations come into cultivation, all with the aim of preserving the quality and character of our wines. The vines are over 30 years old on average.

The buildings that make up the winery Bodegas de la Marquesa include the old part, which includes the ancient underground “Calados” (over 200 years old), dug into the rock to a depth of 10 meters, where the optimum temperature and humidity levels are naturally maintained and remain constant throughout the year.

On the other side, we have a variety of climate-controlled buildings where all of the vinification, aging, and bottling processes are carried out in a safe and clean setting.

Small stainless-steel vats with automatic temperature control with capacities ranging from 8,000 to 30,000 liters are used for fermentation, allowing the various grape varieties to be handled separately, allowing for better grape selection by plot and quality. Vinification and storage was also carried out in epoxy-coated concrete vats.

Vinedos Y Bodegas De La Marquesa hold a number of barrels of about 2,500 units, 70 percent American oak and 30 percent French oak from various sources and finishes, where our wines are slowly aged to acquire the aromas and flavors of cask-aged wines, which confers the finesse and elegance of Rioja wines, as well as great potential for further evolution.

Since 2004, the Winery has held an ISO 9001 certificate, ensuring the consistency of its management system in all processes and goods.

Very recently, Vinedos Y Bodegas De La Marquesa has joined Singapore Awards 2021 and won  TWO GOLD Medal award and a SILVER Medal award, Vinedos Y Bodegas De La Marquesa are indeed the best in quality.

Interview of Mr. Diego Lopez Grandmontagne

Export Manager

Question 1: Do you already export to Singapore ? If yes, where ? If no, what type of importers & distributors are you looking for in Singapore ?

Not yet, that is why we decided to participate in the Singapore Awards 2021, having in mind the importance of good and high ratings in order for people to look to our wines.

Question 2: What is the most unique and qualitative part of your products, different from competitors ?

Being founded more than 140 years ago, Bodegas de La Marquesa Winery and Vineyards remain as the main property of the same family as the founder, which means that all kind of decisions are taken by the family and not by stakeholders. Nowadays is the 4th and 5th generation of the Family who controls almost 85 hectares of vineyards that supply us a limited production every vintage, making possible a continuous regularity and tipicity of all our geniuses wines. Valserrano wines transmit the main characteristics of wines from the region with a personal touch from the family winemaker which aims the authenticity and differentiation of our wines.

Question 3: When did you start to export your brand worldwide, and what is your development plan for the next years ?

We started to export in the late 90’s mainly to Europe as for proximity was easier. Moreover, foreign tourists in Spain knew about the quality of Rioja wines and consumed them during their holidays here, so UK, center-Europeans and Scandinavian people were the first approach and so far, at this moment the most mature markets still. From that we expanded to USA and America. The last development was focused in Asia, exporting nowadays to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. Our aim for Asia is continuing our presence in Asian markets finding the right and most suitable partners in other countries for our philosophy and wines.
