Interview with Olive Oil Cartel : Award Winning 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The Olive Oil Cartel was created by a young couple from Miami that followed their dreams to establish an olive grove in Morocco. Located at the foot of the famous Atlas Mountains and only 40 minutes away from the Atlantic ocean, you will find the largest olive oil grove of the region.

With over 375+ acres, the Olive Oil Cartel has become a fully solar-powered, organic olive grove that ships world wide.

The Olive Oil Cartel strives to inspire others to develop appreciation for the taste of high quality olive oil and all the health benefits that come with it.

In the interview shared below, we gain insights into the company products with a fresh perspective on the values and qualities producer is looking for in the production journey.

Q. What is the core product of Your brand?

A. Award Winning 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Q. Tell us about the process Your product goes through, from sourcing to the packaging phase?

A. Our product is grown on our organic olive grove in Morocco. The trees were planted on virgin lands which provides a soil that is filled with the highest levels of minerals. Our olive trees receive the utmost respect and care while maintaining 100% organic standards. In the fall/winter the olives are picked by hand and cold pressed within 6 hours after picking. This process happens in our Pieralisi cold press machine, which is one of the best machines in the World to press olive oil. The Moroccan Food inspection takes samples for the pressed oil and take it the same day to a government laboratory where they test the olive oil its acidity level, but also for many chemicals. When the Extra Virgin Olive Oil is approved, we are allowed to bottle The Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The Oil goes straight from the locked storage tanks into bottles or 200Liter tanks based on our orders. Most of our orders come from the USA, but we would be honored to export to Singapore.

Q. What are the qualities You are looking for when creating Your product?

A. To be able to create an amazing, healthy product while contribution to the eco-system and its population. On top of it we want to offer this for a fair price.

Q. What makes Your product better than the one of Your competitor?

A. We say with confidence the quality and taste of our fresh, buttery, healthy Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Q. What is the greatest challenge You’ve encountered while creating Your product?

A. We started from scratch by sourcing the right land, soil testing, agricultural technical planning and much more. We literally build an olive grove by ourselves. Our advice is flexibility, grit and resilience and Plan B should be to make Plan A work.

To adapt to Nutri-Grade, a Singapore beverage company will introduce new low-sugar products

To adapt to Nutri-Grade, a Singapore beverage company will introduce new low-sugar products by Singapore Newspaper

Local beverage companies are reformulating and developing low-sugar product options in order to avoid potential repercussions as a result of Singapore’s impending introduction of its sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) labeling system Nutri-Grade, including upcycled drinks company Imperfect Drinks.

The Nutri-Grade concept was first proposed by the Singaporean government in 2020. Following multiple setbacks brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is presently planned to be implemented in December 2022.

The Nutri-Grade system will use nutrient labels with four different grades, ranging from lowest to highest in terms of sugar and saturated fat content: “A” (dark green), “B” (light green), “C” (yellow), and “D” (red). For beverages in grades C and D, the front-of-pack label (FoPL) will be required to be used.

Singapore is becoming a gateway market for fine wines

Singapore is becoming a gateway market for fine wines by Singapore Newspaper

While household budget constraints, recession, and inflation are the main topics of conversation in western nations, these issues are not yet top-of-mind in many Asian economies. In order to offset the possible loss of higher value sales from the US and European markets, brand owners in the wine business, particularly those selling luxury products, are increasingly focused on Asian countries outside of China. And the ongoing tariff problem in China has driven a sweeping shift to these smaller but expanding premium wine markets, especially for Australian winemakers.

Singapore has emerged as one of the most promising regions in the world of premium wines, along with South Korea, which is competing for first place in Wine Intelligence’s Compass Market Attractiveness Model in 2022. Wine is a costly commodity in Singapore, an expat-dominated wine market due to high import costs and taxes. However, the most recent consumer research from Wine Intelligence shows that the sector is evolving, with consumer involvement and spending rising as well as a growing number of wine drinkers.

Expansion of the market and premiumization

In Singapore, the market for alcoholic beverages is dominated by beer, with the wine category accounting for 10% of sales. All wine categories saw consistent volume growth from 2016 to 2021, and it is anticipated that this trend would continue throughout the following five years. According to IWSR research, despite a decline in still wine volumes in Singapore in 2021, the category is predicted to rebound in 2022 and rise over the following five years. Meanwhile, the volume CAGR for sparkling wine in Singapore is predicted to be 4% from 2021 to 2026. It has been expanding in Singapore over the previous five years from a tiny basis.

Spending on wine is rising as well, especially during casual gatherings. The COVID-19 lockdowns prompted consumers to upgrade their purchases and switch to drinking wine at home. As limitations are loosened and on-trade drinking resumes, this behavioral change seems to be long-lasting. Additionally, consumers are opting to drink less but better, which is assisting in the premiumization trend.

One of the main differentiators for Singapore seems to be the underlying economic confidence. While consumer confidence in western markets is rapidly eroding, a majority of Singaporeans appear to be optimistic about their financial situation and the future in general, according to Wine Intelligence’s survey of economic sentiment. Consumers also claim that price promotions are a major factor in their decision-making when it comes to purchasing purchases. The upshot for brand owners is that wine consumers will be motivated to look for a more expensive product for themselves but will want incentives or discounts to justifiably make a more expensive buy.

Since 2020, mainly supermarket and travel-related channels have lost market share, keeping channel usage largely unchanged. Over half of Singapore’s semi-annual wine drinkers purchase wine online, demonstrating the country’s significant online penetration. Over two-thirds of wine drinkers use the internet, which is comparable to mainland China’s percentage of usage among more frequent wine drinkers. While Covid has increased wine consumption at home, the on-trade still plays a significant role in the wine industry, with Singaporeans partaking in on-trade wine consumption at levels comparable to those in the US and Australia.

Market possibilities

A wider base of wine drinkers is advantageous for the wine market. Despite a decline in wine expertise, since 2020, there has been an increase in the percentage of semi-annual wine drinkers who are very active in the category. Contrary to several other markets where we observe younger legal-drinking-age consumers quitting the category, the proportion of Millennial and LDA Gen Z wine drinkers is constant as well (or not joining in the first place). Compared to their elder counterparts, millennial semi-annual wine consumers are typically more daring and like regularly experimenting with new and distinctive wine styles.

In the Wine Intelligence 2022 SOLA Opportunity Index, Singapore is ranked sixth for natural wine, thanks to a high awareness level and rising consideration and affinity scores. The opportunity index is led by natural wine, but green and organic wines have also gained in popularity.

Wine Intelligence spoke with trade specialists who noticed how Singapore has benefited from Hong Kong’s political unrest. Capital and foreign labor forces have been moving into the market, which could increase wine consumption in the future and position the market as a gateway to the region for wine.

Olive Oil Cartel : Taste the freshness of this robust olive oil with a buttery smoothness and a slighty burning sensation

Olive Oil Cartel by Singapore Newspaper

The Olive Oil Cartel is established by a young couple from Miami that followed their dreams to establish an olive grove in Morocco.

Located at the foot of the famous Atlas Mountains and a short drive away from the Atlantic Ocean, you will find the largest olive oil grove of the Essaouira region. With over 375+ acres, the Olive Oil Cartel has established a fully solar-poweredorganic olive grove that ships worldwide.

Our high quality, Extra Virgin Olive Oil is mono-varietal and comes from our single-source family farm.

Each olive is selectively picked by hand at the peak of ripeness and cold-pressed in the evening of the same day. This ensures the highest level of polyphenols and the best taste.

The Olive Oil Cartel has won Gold Awards in the Singapore Awards 2022 Competition for quality and taste of their Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Interview of Singapore Awards to Mr. Abdel El Bacha – Owner

Do you already export to Singapore ? If yes, where ? If no, what type of importers & distributors are you looking for in Singapore ?

Answer : The Olive Oil Cartel has not exported to Singapore yet, but we are very eager to do so. Since we are a family company, we can be extremely flexible to our customers. We believe that we can fulfill the needs of any type of importer/distributor, and we are very happy to work together. We can provide wholesale, white label and/or bottled. Exporting to Singapore would be an honor to us.

What is the most unique and qualitative part of your products, different from competitors?

Answer : Where other countries have depleted their soils for the last hundreds of years, we had the rare opportunity to plant our trees on virgin land. These soils have only been used for grazing and nature has filled it with so many nutrimental minerals. Our trees produce olive oil with very high levels of polyphenols, and yet it has some of the lowest acidity levels possible. Maintenance of an olive tree is a delicate process where the tree deserves the utmost respect and care. Yet, we believe that many producers differ from us because they fail to look at the quality of the soil where they grow their product. This is an overlooked aspect that many growers ignore. It is known that in the Essaouira Region, where our grove is located, the best quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil of Morocco is produced. The mild winters and the long, dry summers provide the best climate for olive tree growth. Essaouira is located at the foot of the Snowy Atlas Mountains and the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. This results in natural underground water reservoirs right beneath our trees that are filled with plenty of minerals, which are an excellent source for our solar-powered irrigation system. The Olive Oil Cartel has won Gold Awards on three different continents, and we will continue to compete and improve.

When did you start to export your brand worldwide, and what is your development plan for the next years?

Answer : We have started to export our product in 2021 to Europe and the USA. Our trees are growing at a rapid speed and every year we will expect more olives which results in more extra virgin olive oil. In October/November 2022 we are expecting about 60.000 liters. In 2026 the Olive Oil Cartel will produce roughly 500.000 liters per year. We would like to export wholesale, whitelabel and/or bottled.

Currently we still have 12.000 bottles of 750ml and 1000 bottles of 1L of this award winning Extra Virgin Olive Oil available right now. This can be shipped immediately.

Even though we might find great pleasure in seeing and sampling wine, we also love it when someone brings wine to our home. While we can buy almost anything online, certain possibilities ease our busy schedule. Hence, we don’t need to keep everything in our mind.
