Laurenz V : all the nuances of the Grüner Veltliner

Must read

Austrian wines are more and more interesting to amateurs. Indeed this  “terroir” has many assets, both from the point of view of soil and climate. Here, the greatest dry white wines come from grüner-vetliner… Laurenz V has therefore put this grape variety in the spotlight in many of his cuvées. Each of them offers a different expression of the most famous Austrian grapes.

Austria has a particularly strict legislation which has led to a spectacular renewal of its production. And if the best dry white wines come from the grüner-veltliner (Lower Austria), Burgenland, renowned production region, first became known for its great sweet wines made from botrytised grapes. Today, this « terroir » also offers the greatest red wines in the country, produced from local grape varieties such as blaufrankisch or zweigelt.

The vineyard

Subject to a continental type climate with hot summers, the vineyard of Laurenz V (pronounced Laurenz five), is concentrated in the eastern fringe of the country. The diversity of topographies and climatic zones makes it possible to produce different styles of wines and to offer a wide range with a very high average quality level.

Variety : Focus on the Grüner Vetliner

This grape is able to give supple wines like great vintage cuvées. It is a productive variety that developed in Austria between the 1920s and 1950s, with the advent of the Lenz Moser trellising system (also called hochkultur, or high culture).

The grape variety adapts to many types of soil but, according to the “terroir”, it gives very different wines. In Burgenland, the Grüner Vetliner offers great minerality and spice notes such as white pepper but also exotic and vegetal fruit aromas, such as parsley or radish that add an extra touch of freshness. Dense and complex, it can titrate up to 14,5 ° alcohol.

The wines : Potential of guard and good food / wine pairing

Many times we know the fruity character of wines from the grüner veltliner, much less its great potential for aging. By evolving, it develops depth and aromatic complexity without losing any of its minerality or freshness.

In addition, it is a wine that goes with a very large number of dishes and / or starters and dessert. Its marked acidity, light fruit and balance allow it to accompany both fish and seafood, all vegetables (usually particularly difficult to tune), but also dishes in sauce (cream, citrus or herbs), or cheeses.

Charming Grüner Veltliner : This wine is thirty plots of Kamptal, has a color straw dress. On the nose, there are notes of spices and almonds. To grow on the lees, this wine offers a rich and round taste. The final is long and juicy, with tangy aromas of citrus. This is the signature product of the Laurenz V estate. Elegant, complex, and… charming, inevitably !
